Actor of the Year in a New Play
1976 - This was the inaugural year of The Oliviers known until 1984 as The Society of West End Theatre Awards. It was awarded to Paul for his portrayal of Pte. Hamp in the London premiere of John Wilson’s “For King and Country” at The Mermaid Theatre, directed by Bernard Miles asstd. by Ron Pember. The award was presented to Paul by Albert Finney - the three other nominees were Richard Beckinsale, Frank Finlay and Alec McCowen. Paul also won the Plays and Players Award “Most Promising Actor” for the same role.
